Why Locals Love El Papalote Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of San Felipe Viejo, El Papalote Restaurant is a cherished Mexican dining gem known for its authentic flavors and warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Celebrated as both a Mexican and breakfast restaurant, El Papalote effortlessly bridges the past and present with its traditional menu, including standout selections like hearty desayunos (breakfasts), comforting comida (lunch/dinner dishes), and convenient comida para llevar (takeout meals).
Stepping inside is like stepping back in time—an ambiance that many patrons, such as Marisol Aleman, fondly associate with their own family memories. The rustic décor, complete with the iconic large scale by the entrance, evokes a genuine, homey charm. This setting perfectly complements the restaurant’s culinary offerings, which are rich with vibrant spices and textures, each bite brimming with heartfelt authenticity.
The menu itself is a celebration of Mexican culinary heritage. Favorites like Alambre de Res (a succulent beef skewer dish) highlight the restaurant’s mastery of classic recipes, delivering tender, flavorful meat paired lovingly with fresh salsas that dance on the palate. Gregory Stokes’s praise for the salsa served before the meal speaks volumes—the bright, tangy sauces set the tone for a deeply satisfying dining experience. Whether you crave a traditional breakfast to start your day or a wholesome meal to share with friends or family, El Papalote provides dishes packed with personality and soul.
Service here is attentive and sincere, as Robert Hopkins noted. Even with language barriers, the staff’s dedication shines through, enhancing the overall experience with warmth and professionalism. While the restaurant accepts Visa and offers beer—a pleasant surprise for many—the recommendation to carry cash for tipping is a small but appreciated insider tip.
What truly makes El Papalote stand out is how it balances its status as a beloved old establishment with the consistently high quality of its food. Silverio Wall aptly describes it as “an old one, but that’s what makes it gold,” a sentiment echoed by many who return time and again for both the taste and the atmosphere.
In sum, El Papalote Restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it’s a culinary time capsule where every meal tells a story, inviting guests to savor the genuine flavors of Chihuahua in a setting that feels like a heartfelt embrace from home.

Was pretty good. Awesome wait staff tried best they could to work past the language barrier. They do take Visa and do have beer even though they don't advertise it. You will need cash to tip though

OMG: best restaurant I've been in Chihuahua, the food is delicious, everything we order was soooo god that I'm definitely going back on my next trip. The atmosphere of the place is like back on time: it was my grandma favorite place to eat and I just figured out why. The food, the people, the place even the huge scale they have by the entrance .

I had the Alambre De Res. I think this is translated beef on a wire or beef on a skewer. It's essentially a Mexican shish kabob. It was good. The best thing I at this restaurant I liked was the salsa they brought before we ordered. The service was good and it was a very pleasant atmosphere. No one on our trip got sick and it was clean food.

The best place to eat breakfast in Chihuahua! I tried the huevos ahogados, huevos divorciados, pancakes, and machaca con huevo and they were delicious! Both the salsa roja (Chile colorado) and the salsa Verde were to die for. I surely come back!

Every dish we have tried here we have enjoyed very much. This is quality food being served. Service can take a while, but it’s always busy when we have ate here, so it’s to be expected too.
